Pets of Eagle Rock

Art by Afreen Majumdar

Even if you don’t have a furry, feathered, or scaly friend of your own, we all hold a special place in our hearts for animals. They are cuddly, amusing, and provide a comforting presence when times are tough. Watching a cat dart around your house for no apparent reason or stroking the soft feathers of a bird can distract from the stress of everyday life. After going around the school and interviewing people about their own animal sidekicks, I created a collection of pictures of these students and their four-legged friends.

All portrait photos by Edith Croshaw; all pet photos by their owners.

Genavieve with Matchka & Modra:

"I love snuggling with my cats. It’s a great way to relieve stress."

Maya Rose with Dumpling the Super Rock:

"I was hesitant at first after finding Dumpling in my backyard. I gave him a face, and he became my pet. Dumpling is an amazing pet! He doesn’t need food, water, or anything. All he likes to do all day is sleep and hang out with me."

Austin Jose with Storm & Sky:

"My favorite thing to do with my cats? I really like to run around with them. Sometimes, when I run, they chase me. It’s entertaining but also scary sometimes."

Valentina with Count Chocula:

"A way that I would describe Count Chocula? Well, she’s kind of grumpy. She usually lays down either in the fireplace or under the couch, and if we try to pet her, she either bites us or allows us to pet her… or she scratches us."

Joan Joya with Furball:

"Furball loves to sit on stools. He won’t do tricks, but he’ll eat anything."
