About

When asked about her childhood, Rianne Hizon (she/her) – who’s always dressed in the cutest school uniform-esque outfits and hair clips – declared herself a “menace”! If you handed her a pair of scissors and paper, she would cut them up and create crafts that she thought never came out well. But you could still find memories from her childhood in the form of drawings hung up in her mother’s closet.

Now in eighth grade, Rianne says she’s become more attracted to her computer and has picked up gaming. Though this is her first year in journalism, Rianne is already well acquainted with the art of journalism, serving as the editor-in-chief of her elementary school’s publication. She also had installments of her novel published in The Eagle’s Scream before she entered the class.

Despite her first love of writing, Rianne’s true passion is acting. In 4th grade, she was invited by her older brother to see Theater Company’s production of Spamalot, and she felt a kind of euphoria that she couldn’t find anywhere else. Now, Rianne’s a member of the company.

She has big dreams of attending Juilliard and starring as the main character of her favorite musical, Miss Saigon. In between shows, she thinks that maybe she’ll live in New York (per her mother’s request to “get out of my house!”) in an apartment, and own a cat.

Jaywalking at ERHS
Photo taken by Nyda Los Angeles, California, is a city infamous for its abundance of traffic. Being the second largest city in the US, it’s not surprising that many residents own a car, with 80% of households in LA owning/having access to at least one vehicle. Though this helps with long distance travel and getting around the city, being car-centric has its cons, such as the high rate of pedestrian fatalities, some of which are caused by jaywalking. Jaywalking is described by OxfordLanguages...

ChatGPT: A tool, or a cheat?
Art by Emaline Varava ChatGPT, founded by OpenAI in 2015 and released in November of 2022, has become a famous website worldwide. Whether you are a student, teacher, or parent, you’ve probably heard of it—or maybe even used it. The AI Chatbot can be used to create images, search the web, and can also be used to generate pieces of writing like a full essay.  That leads me to the whole topic of this article: Using AI on assignments. It’s no shocker that some students use AI to complete their...

Why does no one say the Pledge of Allegiance anymore?
Art by Zazie Pritchett-Sidle If you live in America, you are likely aware of the Pledge of Allegiance . First written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, the Pledge was created to be used in any country. It wasn’t until 1923 that it was changed to fit the United States. After a number of revisions from the years of 1892 to 1954, the Pledge eventually became the one we say today:  I Pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation,...
