The rich rhythm and booming beats of the West African drums sound as Leo Aviña, a current 8th grader at ERHS, makes music with his unique talent. Although this is his first year with The Eagle’s Scream, Leo Aviña’s skills and knowledge evidently expand far beyond just writing. As mentioned, Leo is a talented drummer who began his musical journey seven years ago. Additionally, his expansive knowledge is encapsulated in his love for history, which he’s held since he was young. 

Show Leo the flag of any country, and in an instant, you’ll have accurate identification. While history and film are some of Leo’s favorite classes, he’s taken an interest in geography and vexillology- the study of flags. In addition to Leo’s historical genius, he’s an animal lover at heart. He takes pride in his three pets: Lunchbox the frog, Smaug the leopard gecko, and Ollie the schnauzer. Don’t let his love for animals fool you, though. Leo loves food as much, if not more than the average person, with his favorite meal being octopus. 

While life after high school is still far away, Leo envisions himself staying local; although, if he could live anywhere in the world, he’d settle down in Copenhagen, Denmark. As an aspiring historian or zoologist, Leo would like to study at UC Santa Barbara, a school that caught his eye when touring for his sister. No matter where the future takes him, his love for animals and history will always remain; and hopefully, he can have a pet pangolin by his side.
