How to make the perfect apple pie

Updated: May 14

Apple pie is one of the true arts of the world. A desert that is perfect for any time of the year and any occasion– that is if you make it right.  There are a variety of factors important to keep in mind when baking an apple pie including crust, style, and filling.

Filling

The key to making the perfect apple pie filling is finding a recipe specific to the type of apples you are using. Pay close attention to the type of apple suggested in the recipe, because different types of apple are NOT interchangeable. Making a tart apple pie with gala apples or a sweet apple pie with granny smith apples will ultimately result in a way too sweet or too tart of a pie. I find Gala apples to be the most easy and consistent apple to use since they are regularly available in stores and are naturally very sweet.

Steps to Making the Perfect Apple Pie

First, it is crucial that you peel and slice all of your apples. Only measure your apples once they are already peeled and sliced, otherwise your measurements will be disproportionate.

Then, measure out all of your spices and ingredients and thoroughly toss them with the apples so every apple is coated equally.

Lastly, stuff your crust with as much filling as possible before putting it in the oven. The liquid from most of the apples winds up evaporating in the oven and resulting in the apples striking in size, therefore use as much filling as possible to ensure that the pie has a good ratio of filling to crust proportion.

With this in mind - we at the Eagle’s Scream wish you the best of luck on your next apple pie journey. Good luck soldier.
