DISCLAIMER: Although the data in this article is unbiased, our reaction is based on how we feel about each of the candies mentioned and what we think of the results of our poll.

Halloween is right around the corner, and with the tricks and treats starting to appear around the school, we asked YOU Eagles for your favorite candies. Out of the 2,000+ students here at ERHS, 359 students (~18% of the school) gave us their top three favorite Halloween candies. From there, we put the responses through a point system that goes as follows:

For every time an individual candy got a response that placed it in 1st place, it received 3 points. With 2nd and 3rd place, the following applies: 2 points for 2nd and 1 point for 3rd. Then, we added up all the points for each candy and gave our reactions to the podium and highlights of the poll.

Before we get into the results of the school-wide poll, here are the percentages of each grade that responded. A flat 100 of the responses came from the new 7th graders, while juniors and seniors didn’t answer as much, with only 32 from juniors and 27 from our soon-to-be graduating seniors. After the 7th graders, the 9th graders handily received 2nd place with a total of 77 responses while the 8th and 10th graders duked it out for 3rd (66 and 57 responses, respectively). With that out of the way, let’s dive into the results of our poll.

3rd Place: Kit Kat

Gavin’s Opinion: Honestly, I wasn’t too surprised by this one. With a total of 180 points, this is definitely one of the more popular candies out there. Many love the inner wafers with the chocolate coating on the top, which makes this an enjoyable treat for a lot of people, including many of our Eagles. I haven’t had a lot of candy in a while, but I do remember Kit Kats tasting very good. The chocolate and wafer balance out to make it melt in your mouth, and I’m sure many Eagles will be pleasantly delighted to receive Kit Kats in their bag of treats this Halloween. I even find the simple packaging of the candy to be appealing. Overall, my personal ranking of Kit Kats is a 9/10. They are truly an iconic candy, and make sure to break it in half before eating it, just like 7th grader Ben Tran warns. Otherwise, “you should be in a mental institution.”

Leo’s Rant: Coming from someone who doesn't like chocolate, I can definitely say that I'm not upset with this placement. Personally, Kit Kats are my favorite chocolate bar. That being said, 99% of the time I’m scarfing down a Kit Kat. It's almost always one of the other flavors nobody gives a second thought to (flavors like strawberry, orange and birthday cake). With my personal pickiness out of the way, I have to say that the wafer chocolate combo makes for a crisp, delectable, melt in your mouth treat that’s easily a solid 8/10 in my eyes. But let’s be honest Eagles, Kit Kats as a halloween candy never really taste as good as if you were to just get one normally (this happens with most candies but especially Kit-Kat as is the case with “premium candies”). Maybe it's because they're packaged in the bulk candy bags as a single sad little bar, maybe because my dumb dumb neighbors leave them out in the elements all day in their stupid “Please take One” buckets. Honestly, I’m not sure but I can safely say Kit Kats definitely warrant their #3 spot. Also, if I catch any of you Eagles breaking a Kit Kat lengthwise, I’m going to be under your bed tonight…

2nd Place: Sour Patch Kids

Gavin’s Opinion: I don’t eat Sour Patch Kids that often, but when I do I always appreciate the chewy texture and sweet flavor of the candy. I have a knack for the red ones for some reason. This is one of the most popular fruity candies out there, and it’s no surprise that Sour Patch Kids came in 2nd place at 261 points, just shy of 1st. I hope to get many of these this Halloween, and even if I don’t, I’d probably be tempted to purchase them in stores. I can see why many Eagles love this candy. It’s the perfect blend of sweet and sour, along with its colorful variety, the chewiness, and the texture. This one is definitely for you if you’re a fruity candy lover. Even if you prefer chocolate or just don’t like candy in general, I think you’d still have a blast when you eat Sour Patch Kids. With this candy being almost everywhere, there’s no doubt many of our Eagles will jump for joy when getting many of these on Halloween. For me, Sour Patch Kids are a solid 8.5/10. The only factor that bumps it a bit lower than Kit Kats is that I’m not the biggest fan of fruity candy, but that’s just me. It makes a perfect snack for a lot of people.

Leo’s Rant: Sour Patch Kids are undoubtedly the greatest candy on Earth, no questions asked and I think it is absolute travesty that they lost out on the #1 spot to such a middle of the pack chocolate bar (more on that later). So to all of you Eagles who didn’t vote for Sour Patch Kids for #1, let me state my case…

  1. They’re dirt cheap compared to other candies of the same incredible caliber.

  2. They don’t have the issue I talked about in the Kit Kats section with the inconsistency.

  3. They’re at every single movie theater and convenience store.

  4. There’s five different flavors (Personally, my favorite is lime/green), so if you don’t like one of them, there’s 4 others to choose from.

  5.  They have just the right amount of chewiness and sourness to make them snackable.

  6.  If you eat the clump of sour powder at the bottom of a bag, you’ll feel like Superman for about a minute.

  7. Finally, all of the varieties like the watermelon wedges and the extreme sour kids are just as good if not better.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

1st Place: Twix

Gavin’s Opinion: Twix is one of the best chocolate bars of all time. The caramel filling blends perfectly with the crunchy outer layer of the candy. This is why, unsurprisingly, this candy placed at the very top of our poll. I’ve always enjoyed these candy bars ever since I was a little kid. Regardless of what other people think, nothing can change my view of Twix. Back when I was a lot younger, this candy was definitely one that I enjoyed.  I could see myself this Halloween indulging in a bunch of Twix once again. Landing itself in 1st place with a grand total of 281 points, just 20 points above Sour Patch Kids, I was very ecstatic to see the result. However, on second thought, how did the nutty, nougat-filled Snickers not even make it close to Twix? When I think of Halloween candies, Snickers and Twix are the first two that come to mind, although this could just be me. In conclusion, I’m glad that many Eagles view Twix as one of the best candies out there. For me, this candy bar is part of my childhood nostalgia.

Leo’s Rant: Twix on paper sounds like God’s gift to mankind;  a crumbly cookie topped with caramel and covered in milk chocolate sounds fantastic. But in reality (to me at least), it comes out as just a painfully generic, inoffensive, 6/10 chocolate bar that has some good crunch but you could easily find a better alternative to. Don’t get me wrong, Twix tastes just fine to me, it’s just I’m not going to be writing letters to home about its “Oh so exuberantly stupendous rich chocolate flavor” like some people do. I understand WHY it took the number one spot (with a whooping total of 281 points), BUT it's objectively worse than Sour Patch kids. ¡Viva los niños del parche agrio!

Honorable Mentions:

4. Jolly Ranchers: 152 points

5. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups: 140 points

6. Skittles: 130 points

7. Nerds: 122 points

8. Snickers: 97 points

Gavin’s Opinion: Rebecca Pack, a 10th grader, has something against cherry Jolly Ranchers. “Jolly Ranchers are super yummy (EXCEPT the cherry flavor) and easy to eat while you trick or treat.” She also likes chocolate, saying “you can never go wrong with chocolate.” Another student going by the pen name “John” gave us probably one of the best responses of the entire poll, putting Scorpion Lollipops for each one of the 3 podium spots. If you know, you know. Emma Gregory, a 7th grader, expressed her love for Mexican candy while filling out our form, answering Limon 7 Paleta, Lucas Candy, and Pelon in that order.

Leo’s Rant: Werther’s Original is the name of the small, tannish caramel candy that you’ll find in old ladies’ bags and receptionist’s candy bowls alike. So, can somebody check 10th grader Sebastian Castro’s birth certificate to confirm that he’s below the age of 70? Because he put Werther’s Original as his #2 favorite candy. If you are a friend of Sebastian, please reach out to us; this is very distressing. Another student by the pen name of Mr. Overcomplicated, dedicated his time filling out our form with Circus Peanuts in all 3 of his podium responses. When he asked to elaborate further, he merely ChatGPTed a response, probably because he realized that no human being to ever walk the Earth has had or will ever have the ability to defend Circus Peanuts (Why would someone willingly eat a hard marshmellow?). 7th grader Ana Osenko put 3 Musketeers for their number one spot, with a caption reading “Fight me” and to that, I say next Friday, lunch, softball field; let’s go. Finally, Kaylee/October says “Have a safe and fun Halloween!” Which is not true, Eagles. Have an outrageously dangerous and terrible Halloween!

In conclusion, these were the results of our poll about different students’ favorite Halloween candy. We surely had a blast doing this, especially because we love to rank different foods, restaurants, and snacks all the time. And to all the Eagles who said “6, 7” in their response….

We will find you.
