If you’re in high school already, do you still remember your 8th grade year? How many anecdotes can you think of off the top of your head when you try to revisit your final year of middle school? Students who’ve been at ERHS since 7th grade can probably recall how it felt to be a newbie at the school. Especially this year’s 8th graders, since this is the first year that they stopped getting the special treatment that the new 7th graders get. In this article, 8th graders share their experience so far about being only a few months away from culmination and becoming high schoolers.

What do you think you could do to improve your grades?
“You have to get better at school, and stay after class. You have to also lock in, be smarter, and listen to the teacher.” - Luca Cabral
Now that the 7th graders arrived here at ERHS, how do you feel about not being the youngest ones in the school?
“I feel great being an 8th grader because I feel like I have power over the 7th graders now.” - Atticus Duffy-Dirkes
Are you looking forward to culmination next semester? Do you have fears going into high school?
“I’m looking forward to going to Six Flags and culminating next semester.” - Kelvin Jones III
Do you have a girlfriend or boyfriend? What do you think are the pros and cons of the relationship?
“Yes, I do, and I think the pros are you get to date a pretty girl and the girl is someone you want. I think the cons are that you have to go to sleep later because the girl wants to text you late at night.” - Nicholas Chaidez

What do you like to do most at lunch?
“I like to hang out with my friends and walk around. Also, I think that the phones should only be in the Yondr pouches during class so we could use them during lunch.” - Giana Dunn
If you could change one thing about the school, what would it be?
“I want the football field reconstruction to happen after I graduate.“ - Ever Van Wagner

Is there any subject that you’re not that fond of? Why?
“I would say science, because I’m just not a huge fan of it and I’m not very good at it anyway, because it’s hard.” - Elouise Griffin
Are you happy with your experience at ERHS so far?
“There were a lot of ups and downs, but besides that it’s been pretty good so far.” - Miranda Montenegro
Do you want to give a shoutout to anyone here at the school, whether it’s a student, a teacher, or someone else entirely?
“Ms. Stough! She’s so nice and she’s the best teacher ever. She’s taught me a lot, she’s very good at teaching math and she’s never made me feel bad about myself. “- Leah Penciu
What’s your favorite memory so far in 8th grade?
“Going to the first football game of the year with my friends.” - Greta Mackle

Would you want to advance to high school right now, or go back to elementary?
“I would want to go back to elementary because it was less stressful. The community was more open and since you had only one teacher you got to have a better connection with them.” - Stevie Cooke-Coulter

If you would stay in one class for the whole school day, what would it be?
“I would stay in Mr. Carrano’s history class because Mr. Carrano is goated, there’s food, and it’s low-key very chill.” - Darius Rota
What’s one thing you wished you knew before being an 8th grader?
“That you shouldn’t worry about assignments that much. It seems like a lot, but everyone is sort of chill about assignments and you shouldn’t worry about them too much.” - Jackson Clark

When you were younger and had an idea of 8th grade, did you think it was going to be anything like it actually is?
“I thought I was going to be a fully grown adult and know everything. I also thought that I was going to be really responsible.” - Breanna Newton

Do you plan to make any changes to your current school routine when you get to high school?
“I’m pretty set with my routine and I think that it’s pretty great, so I don’t plan on changing it. I think it’s very good and I’m already used to it.” - Noelle Abeniante

What are you happy about/what do you feel proud of so far this year?
“I am proud of trying my best in all my classes and meeting new people.” - Lake Fandell

When you started 8th grade, how did you feel?
“I felt prepared and excited for the new year, and I wanted to meet new people and make more connections. I was also excited to educate myself from the intricate relationships between both my classmates and my teachers.” - Tyger Low

What courses do you plan on taking in high school?
“I plan on taking anything to do with finance, such as financial literacy, or graphing, and maybe something to do with the stock market.” - Kasper Church
What advice would you give to the incoming 8th graders?
“I would say to them that it’s the same as 7th grade mostly, and that you will get used to having 8 classes.” - Frankie Kandell
And that’s a wrap! With twenty 8th graders sharing their 8th grade experience so far, 8th grade surely is a mix of positive and negative experiences, but it depends on what you make of it. If you decide to try your best and get as much out of the school year as you can, 8th grade can be one of the best times of your life and one to remember.
