The revived Reading Rainbow and its original version are both based on the mission of inspiring children to develop a love of reading and writing, but they differ in format and hosts. The original Reading Rainbow, hosted by LeVar Burton, aired for almost 26 years on PBS and became an iconic children's series. The new series launched in October 2025 with Mychal Threets, a librarian and social media figure known for promoting library joy.

One of the most significant changes is the transition from traditional broadcast television to digital streaming. While the original was primarily aired on PBS stations across the U.S., like PBS Kids, the new one is produced by Buffalo Toronto Public Media but distributed on platforms like YouTube and KidZuko.
The hosting style also reflects generational differences. LeVar Burton was already a known actor at the time, and he brought a calming and peaceful presence, soon becoming a beloved advocate for reading. He is remembered for grounding children in stories and literature using gentle learning techniques. While the new host is more known for his online presence on TikTok and Instagram, Threets actively celebrates "library joy" and connects with audiences through social media.
Both versions incorporate guest appearances, but the new series places even greater emphasis on celebrity involvement and interactive activities. The 2025 reboot has featured celebrities such as John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Gabrielle Union, and others narrating stories, alongside new hands-on segments like postcard-making and mini-library creations.
Despite these differences, the values remain unchanged. Both series encourage curiosity and diversity in literature. Though the reboot addresses more modern challenges, such as modern reading habits, it honors the legacy of the original show. Longtime viewers will surely recognize familiar elements such as the famous catchphrase "Take a look, it's in a book!" from the original theme song!
