Welcome to “Let’s talk clubs.” An article series that showcases different organizations across Eagle Rock High School’s vast campus. Today’s spotlight falls upon The Student Union: a club dedicated to serve as a resource for all scholars at The Rock.

The Student Union Club (SUC) is a community among students that aims to provide support, advocacy, and accessible resources to those who may need guidance throughout their middle to high school journey. Whether it may be academic support, student outreach, or simply a safe space to share concerns, the club strives to uplift students and ensure all voices feel heard and valued on campus. Through collaboration and communication with the board and staff, The SUC works together to identify student needs and develop assets that directly benefit the entire school community.

“There are programs and support systems students need. We have noticed. That’s why, in our Junior year of high school, we’ve decided to work towards developing something more than a club, but a community. [Most board members] are in the Diploma Programme, one of the most rigorous courses available on campus. In turn, we’ve come to realise that school is not easy. For a large portion of students, it’s far from it. That’s why we were interested in creating the Student Union Club, a club where students can truly feel part of a community, and support each other through their high school careers, regardless of their situation.” - Jack Benson, President of The SUC

The SUC not only aims to cultivate a supportive community at Eagle Rock High School, but is also well aware of the impacts they intend to create. Elias Kornsweig, the vice president of The Student Union, shares his perspective on the club’s mission: “There are so many problems in schools that go unnoticed, and it's my hope that all students feel and see that they are not alone, and that there is a club willing to fight for their issues. Member or non-member, the club is also a place of community, where anybody can find resources that will help them thrive.” The Student Union is committed to not only addressing concerns, but also empowering students to take part in meaningful action within their school.

Though the SUC was only formed this school year by the current board, they hope to create a lasting legacy for future scholars to maintain; however, accomplishing this requires your help! If you’re interested in learning more about this club or would like to be further involved, be sure to attend The Student Union’s biweekly Thursday meetings at lunch, in Ms. Franco’s classroom, room 211. If you have any issues that you feel should be taken into account by this club, check out this Google Form to submit your concerns. Also, feel free to take a look at their Instagram, @erhsstudentunion! The Student Union’s work is only just beginning; with more student support, it will continue to blossom and foster even more assistance for current middle to high schoolers and future ones as well.
