After an estimated 50 years of the group’s dissolution, Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes is bringing the world-renowned and beloved band The Beatles back to life with a four film biopic series set to release in April of 2028. In the initial months of 2024, Sony Pictures confirmed the project, sparking both joy and concern among fans (myself included). Now comes the real question: Can You Dig It? Should Mendes have just Let it Be, or will audience reactions show him some Real Love?

The movie series is made up of four films set to follow each singer individually: Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. Rather than compressing each of their stories into one, Mendes is aiming to give each Beatle their Day Tripper moment, allowing viewers to recognize and appreciate the four different personalities that came together to change music forever.

Think For Yourself. Although The Beatles hold a massive fanbase, the confirmation of the movie series’ release caused major skepticism. From articles like “Roundtable – The Beatles Biopic: See or skip?” to “Four Chances for Disaster: Can The Awful Beatle Biopics Be Saved?”, a variety of opinion pieces quickly surfaced to critique Mendes and argue about whether or not this biopic was necessary at all. With harsh statements such as, “I should be excited about the four-part Beatles biopic films. . . but I’m not,” many fans worry the films may struggle to capture the raw chemistry of the band, and others simply fear Hollywood is attempting to create another one of its awfully received and produced biopics. For longtime listeners, The Beatles aren’t just a band, they’re a feeling! That is not something you can simply recreate.

To build onto the negative backlash, despite hosting a star-studded cast, many fans expressed frustration after the company’s reveal. According to the article titled “Who’s Who In ‘The Beatles -- A Four Film Cinematic Event Movies’ From Sam Mendes,” Paul Mescal is set to play Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson will portray John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan will take on Ringo Starr. However, with four big names came big disappointment. The article “The Beatles Fans Are Obviously Furious Over The Movies’ Casting” states, “Some Beatles fans are angry that the film went with stereotypically ‘hot’ famous actors rather than casting unknown actors who look more like the band members. . .The Beatles like to claim that “All You Need Is Love,” but it turns out, for biopics, all you need is good casting.” Rather than searching to find younger, more underground actors to give them a chance to shine, fans were let down with large industry names taking center stage. Some speculate that conventionally attractive stars (with the exception of Barry Keoghan) might overshadow raw charm and individuality that defined the original band members. As anticipation builds for the four-film project, the casting controversy demonstrates how protective fans remain over the story of one of music’s most prominent bands of all time.

Aside from the multitude of bleak reactions, many are incredibly excited for the biopic. Supporters argue that bringing together acclaimed actors under the direction of Mendes will signal a serious and ambitious retelling of the story of The Beatles. With each member receiving a dedicated film, fans are hopeful that the project will dive deeper into the personal struggles, identities, and emotions that formed the band’s rise and eventual breakup. Rather than viewing this biopic as a drawback, fans see it as an opportunity to utilize modernity in order to revive legendary musical stories from the past.

Remember: Can’t Buy Me Love. True fans of The Beatles will recognize authenticity from these films, and see right through a quick cash grab. The Beatles’ music transcends generations, holding a special legacy that has infiltrated many fan’s lives and plenty to follow. A new biopic series has the potential to introduce younger viewers to the band’s story, continuing to extend their legacy and impact. If done properly, the film could act as a Ticket To Ride for a whole new generation of supporters.

Mendes, Don’t Let Me Down! Plenty are incredibly excited about this upcoming release. As seen in his past films, he holds a strong reputation for showcasing powerful storytelling, and hopefully the same results can be channeled through this series. In the end, I’ve Got A Feeling that these films will have major success. Through this series release, a spotlight will return to one of the best bands in history. If Mendes can truly do The Fab Four justice, fans worldwide will be reminded as to why The Beatles still remain Here, There, and Everywhere.

P.S.--Stay tuned for 2028; maybe I’ll review the four films in an article too!
