Summer boredom; here's what to do

The end of the school year is fast approaching, and with it comes summer break. And while this is something that I always look forward to, sometimes the absence of a rigid schedule and things to do can be dull, especially when consistently doing the same, generally unhealthy activities day after day. In this article, I will be sharing some activities that can be done during summer break that you may have yet to do.

Playing a board game:

Board games can be fun activities played practically whenever that can be enjoyable for anyone. They come in a variety of complexities, topics, and styles. They also come in different lengths of play, even ranging into multiple hours. Some of my favorite board games are Settlers of Catan and Terraforming Mars. Board games are great activities that just about anyone can play, and they can be a nice change from watching TV or binging Netflix.

Go for a hike:

Having lots of free time means that there are lots of places you can go and spend a lot of time at. One activity that you can do with friends and family is to go for a hike or spend time at a park. Rex has a great article on hikes on the ERScream, and as he said, hiking is an easy and affordable way to spend an afternoon near Los Angeles. Going to a park can also be a lot of fun, especially if you go with some friends. There are plenty of great parks around and near the city, and if you have spent the past school year inside all the time, going outside can be a great thing to do.

Go camping:

Camping is another fun way to get outside and spend time with friends and family. Instead of living with electronics all summer, camping can allow you to get out of town and have a lot of fun doing things you wouldn’t usually do. Camping can be done with just about anyone, but I have found it most enjoyable with close friends. Additionally, camping can be a lot cheaper than other trips that might require staying at a hotel.

Do something with friends:

Friendships are a very important part of school and life in general, and maintaining them is just as important. Because of this, doing something with friends can be not only rewarding but also help your relationship. Even little things such as hanging out for a couple of hours are incredibly enjoyable, and something that I often find myself failing to do even though all they require are inviting someone to do something.

Visit the library:

Libraries are a public service that most people don’t appreciate enough. Not only do they offer a plentiful collection of books, but they can also be used as a quiet working space. Additionally, students will have Summer reading assigned during this break, and going to the library can be helpful both with finding the book and as somewhere to complete the assignment outside of the home. Furthermore, you might find other books to read purely for yourself.

Hopefully, these activities will be helpful to anyone reading this article. I know that these are activities that I find enjoyable or helpful for me, but are something that I don’t find myself doing enough. Still, maybe they will be something for you to do if you find yourself bored during the summer.
